About
This is a blog dedicated to the often overlooked and misunderstood art of marketing technology. If you are at a cocktail party and work in tech and are commonly met with blank stares, panic, or a mumbled “huh” when you mention what you do for a living – you’re not alone.
While our peers may view us tech marketers as freaks who work with geeks, much of what impacts all our daily lives comes from what products savvy marketers are able to get adopted. Notice that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the best product.
My hope is to offer an opinion or an interesting link on some of these different areas. You may not agree. That’s cool. Keep it cordial and let’s have a discussion via the comments.
About the author:
Hi, my name is Jake Cook and I live in Bozeman, Montana. My background is largely in the startup world ranging from software in Big Pharma, to 3D printing service providers, to consumer medical devices. Some of these were investor backed and other bootstrapped enterprises. Some succeeded and some have failed. I’ve also been fortunate to do some work for larger tech companies, most recently Microsoft Corp.
Much of what appears under the “Theory” and “Strategy” categories originally surfaced in a class I taught at Montana State University’s College of Business on “Marketing for Technology” starting in 2007.
I have a BA degree in physics and an MA in marketing from Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. A stint studying mechanical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis helped me stumble into tech marketing. A biomedical internship enlightened me on why engineers and marketing people are often at odds. However, I find straddling the divide makes for interesting work.
I spend my free time enjoying all that southwest Montana has to offer outside (fly-fishing, backpacking, snowboarding). In addition, I’m working on my cooking skills and design and build furniture and lamps for fun.
